Emotional Health and Well Being of Children and Adolescents
Childhood and adolescence is a process of learning about ourselves as individuals, other people and the world around us. Sometimes young people under the age of 18 face difficulties which significantly impacts on their emotional health and well being. Yorkshire Psychology Practice therapists can help young people and their families share their resilience to manage the challenges of growing up into adulthood whilst growing together as a family in a positive way.
Trained and experienced in working with children, young people and their families
Our Psychologists are specially trained and experienced in working with children and young people and their families. Some of us also specialise in working with looked after children and families of adoption. We will ensure that we find the right therapeutic approach to suit each young person whether it be through counselling or something more creative such as play therapy. It is our priority to make sure we build a safe and trusting relationship with all our young people so that they feel confident exploring their difficulties.
We can support the Adults too
We can also support you if you are a parent who is seeking advice and support to help bonding with your child, supporting your child whilst they have counselling, or looking for strategies for more positive parenting.
Initial Family Therapy Appointment
It is usually helpful to have some discussion with the family without the child if the are aged under 14 years old to understand what you think are their presenting problems. Otherwise, your child will be offered an initial appointment which you are welcome to attend for moral support. It can often be useful to hear your concerns about what is happening. Next, if you are all comfortable, your child will attend the second session on their own.
Family Therapy Programme
The psychologist is generally building a good understanding of the problems that are being faced and how they are being currently dealt with in the first three appointments. They will describe that picture to you and suggest a therapy programme. If everybody agrees with the programme your child will begin therapy.
