Dr Kate Barker D.Clin.Psy Senior Clinical Psychologist

I am an experienced Clinical Psychologist and offer assessment and individual assessment to adults aged 18 and over. I have experience of working with a wide range of difficulties, including anxiety, stress, depression and low mood, OCD, eating related problems, anger, personality problems, trauma and PTSD, relationship difficulties, and low self-esteem / low confidence.

I have additional training in Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT). I am also experienced in using Mindfulness and CBT.

I enjoy working with people and am continually amazed by the resilience of human beings to overcome adversity and make changes. I believe change can only happen if the relationship with the therapist feels safe and trusting.  My aim is to allow you to feel that you can use the time we spend working together to achieve your goals, working at a pace that feels comfortable to you and allowing you to come to a greater understanding of yourself and the problems you are having.

Sometimes people come to therapy with a specific issue that is causing them difficulty in the here and now, for example feeling anxious or low. For others it may be that they have noticed they are stuck in repeating patterns of behaviour that create problems for them and others around them. Equally, it may be an issue from the past that is troubling and will not go away that motivates individuals to seek help to make a change. I offer short and long term therapy. I work in an integrated way which means I draw on a range of therapeutic approaches to offer an intervention that is tailored to you, after all we are all unique individuals and one size does not fit all. My approach is a balance of providing a safe space to listen, validate and help you understand yourself better, alongside introducing you to skills and strategies that you can use to help you manage your thoughts, feelings and behaviors differently. I use the assessment process to consider with you what might help and how long this might take. You can then decide if you think I am the right person to support you through the process of change.
